Some of that stimulation must be autonomous, self-initiated, self-directed activity or they get depressed. This is why so many cat toys are human-hands-off. He needs to feel as if he captured that little fabric catnip mouse all by himself. It gives him a sense of accomplishment. When he's happy his coat is softer and smoother, and he yowls less.
